2027: Bayelsa PDP Backs Zoning of Presidential Ticket to South, Affirms Support for Anyanwu
The Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has thrown its weight behind the growing call to zone the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the Southern region of Nigeria, citing the principles of equity, fairness, and national unity.
In a statement released by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Derri Alasuote Wright, the Bayelsa PDP commended the position taken by key stakeholders across Nigeria in favour of southern zoning, stating that such a move would keep the PDP attuned to the aspirations of a diverse electorate.
“This decision reflects our commitment to inclusiveness and fairness, ensuring that our party remains responsive to the aspirations of all Nigerians,” the statement read.
The endorsement aligns with broader calls from party loyalists and regional blocs who argue that rotating the presidency strengthens the country’s democratic fabric and addresses concerns of marginalisation.
Reaffirming internal party unity, the Bayelsa PDP also declared its unequivocal support for Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP, noting that the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the matter was clear and final.
The acting state chairman, George Turnah, praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and key members of the G5 coalition — including former Governors Samuel Ortom, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi — for their decisive roles in shaping the party’s strategic direction.
Turnah described Wike’s continued involvement in party affairs as evidence of his “unwavering love” for the PDP and commitment to internal justice and stability.
“Wike’s actions have endeared him to all genuinely committed members of the party nationwide,” Turnah stated.
He also affirmed that the recent meeting convened in Abuja with top PDP figures underscores a collective resolve to keep the party unified and focused ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“We fully endorse the resolutions reached at the meeting, and as a state chapter, we stand by the recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the National Secretary of the PDP. There is no vacancy requiring any replacement whatsoever,” the statement concluded.
As the PDP begins realignments for 2027, the Bayelsa chapter’s firm stance is expected to influence regional consensus-building and deepen conversations on zoning and party leadership legitimacy.
